Ravi Bharati Celebrates Silver Jubilee of its Street Theater Festival
Silver Jubilee of Ravi Bharati Street Theater Festival
Street theater is one of the low cost media used specially for the empowerment process of the underprivileged masses. In a world of modern media scenario, many think that street theater has lost its relevance. But to me street thaeter has more relevance in a world affected by modern media messages. Stree theater always has the advantage of direct access to the people who watch the show. Immediate feedback is possible in this type of communication. Without much economic burden, messages could be communicted to people in a powerful way. It doesn't depend much on the external factors like costumes, PA system, satge, etc. In fact, street theater is a simple means of communicating a message, but a powerful tool.
Ravi Bharati has been involved in training street theater teams for the past 25 years or more. Every year the institute conducts street theater festival in collaboration with the professional/semi-professional teams within the city and outside. It is a three-day festival consisting of seminar in the morning hours of all the three days and street play performances by various teams in the afternoon. This year Ravi Bharati completed 25 years when it conducted this festival from 19-21st February 2011. It is not a competiotion, but a platform for all those who are involved in using street theater as a means of communicating empowering messages to people, to come together and share experiences and learn from one another.
This year 15 teams particiapted in the festival. Street plays like 'gadda', 'sava ser genhu', 'machine', 'katha sarai ke', 'janta pagal ho gai', 'gopi gavaiya bagha bajaiya', 'bade bhai saheb', etc. were perfromed, which kept the audience spell bound.
Noted script writers and theter artists like; Parvesh Akhtar and Rishikesh Sulabh were resource persons for the seminar. Interested individuals and groups participated in the seminar and interacted with the speakers.
Street theater festival is conducted during the first weekend of February every year.

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms entitled to any person, regardless of economic status, nationality, jurisdiction, age, ability, ethnicity, sex, and sexuality. These basic rights are the right to life, freedom, equality, justice, and freedom of thought and expression.
In 1948, the world community spoke through the United Nations by establishing a framework for human rights awareness and protection with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This was the first time that the protection of human rights was officially declared an international responsibility. Since then, human rights education and awareness has taken root in countries all over the world.
Every child has a right to their childhood – a hopeful existence free of exploitation, violence, neglect, and extreme poverty. Children need education, health services, consistent support systems as well as love, hope and encouragement; all these things and more are required in order to experience childhood to the fullest, and to eventually develop into healthy, capable adults.
The reason that we emphasize “women’s rights” within human rights goes beyond history. Unfortunately, gender inequality is still present in every society and remains as a huge barrier for the world. The origin of the discrimination is sometimes religion, beliefs, cultural traditions or political interests. These excuses in some occasions encourage the unequal and discriminatory treatment of women, thus creating oppressed communities.
Dalit Rights, Rights of displaced and vulnerable people, Minority Rights are also human rights frameworks and there are several issues thrown up particular to our country and region.
Sexuality Minorities are more likely to experience intolerance, discrimination, harassment, and the threat of violence due to their sexual orientation, than those that identify themselves as heterosexual.
Abhivyakti 2010 is a space for the expression through the low cost video. It’s a space for sharing and discussion. It’s also a place to learn from the works of contemporary practitioners and communicators.
